"LIVING BLUES, Number 8, SPRING, 1972"
Hard Working Woman ~ MISSISSIPPI MATILDA
By Bob Eagle & Steve LaVere
Mississippi Matilda lives comfortably in a neatly furnished apartment on Chicago's South Side. She is now a licensed baby-sitter and has little interest in the days when she made recodings for the Bluebird label.
Matilda was born Matilda Witherspoon in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on January 27th, 1914. When her mother Anna died in about 1919, she was raised partly by her father, Dallas Witherspoon, and her mother's first cousin, Minnie Long. The family moved to Foxworth and then Clyde, Lamar County, and Bogalusa, Louisiana, moving with the sawmills as they changed locations. In Bogalusa she finshed her forman education (through eighth grade).
When Matilda was 12, Matilda was confirmed in Mt. Zion Church, whose pastor was Rev. Eli Eley. She sang in the choir and has always since been interested in singing. The following year she went to visit an aunt in Haddiesburg, stayed on, and married when 14 to Calvin Bass (not a musician), a man 10 years her senior.
Matilda bore Calvin two children in the four years they were together, then she left for the Mississippi Delta. She worked in cafes and picked cotton around Hollandale and seems to have then become interested in singing secular music. She recalls that she was singing before she met Eugene "Sonny Boy Nelson" Powell a guitarist whom she married in September 1935.
Eugene and his wife played together at dances and clubs in the area and then had the opportunity to record for Bluebird in 1936. Matilda remembers traveling to New Orleans for the session with San & Bo Chatmon, Walter Vinson, Willie Harris, Robert Hill, a harmonica player from Hollandale, and (of course) Eugene. Bo was at that time living in Glenallen, Mississippi.
Mississippi Matilda's only recording session:
Vocal accompanied by Sonny Boy Nelson, guitar; Willie Harris Jr., guitar. St. Charles Hotel, New Orleans, Thursday, October 15th, 1936
.
MISSISSIPPI MATILDA - Hard Working Woman - Bluebird-B6812.
02593 - "Peel Your Banana" - Bluebird-unissued
02594 - "A. & V. Blues" - Bluebird-B7908
02595 - "Hard Working Woman" - Bluebird-B6812
02596 - "Happy Home Blues" - Bluebird-B6812
Although she recalls receiving checks from the company after the session, the records made little or no impression on Matilda's career, as she and Eugene simply continued to play the same places as before.
Matilda recalled "Peel Your Banana" and "Hard Working Woman", but thought that Sam & Willie may have played guitars on her records in addition to her husband.
As she and Eugene have eight childen, /matilda soon found she had no time for singing, and she kept singing for only one year after the Bluebird session.
Eugene and Matilda separated in 1952 and she farmed at Scott, Mississippi, with her children until 1956, when she moved to Chicago. In Chicago she worked as a housekeeper for a long periods at each of two homes. She also married again in 1957, this time to Jasper Williams. Recently she decided to take up baby-sitting in preference to the long traveling required to go to the housekeeping jobs.
Matilda is now involved deeply in the Baptist Church and declines to sing the blues. She lives on a quiet street and her greatest interest is in her 42 grandchildren.
